Artificial intelligence
(AI) is the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science
that aims to create it. AI textbooks define the field as "the study and
design of intelligent agents"where an intelligent agent
is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its
chances of success.John McCarthy,
who coined the term in 1955,
defines it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.
Human
cognition is central to clinical decision making. Clinical
information involves histories that can be biased by the manner in which
questions are asked, vague clinical signs that are assessed with several senses
and diagnostic laboratory tests that are not perfect. If clinicians have a
fundamental understanding of the process of cognition and inherent weaknesses
in the process, they will be better able to compensate for weaknesses in this
process and arrive at better clinical decisions in the long run. The purpose of
this webpage is to provide a collection of links to on-line materials.
